Building is a rich heritage of our family.
As a little tot I remember being out in the shop, watching my dad build fine cabinetry for the custom houses he was building. Both of my grandfathers were involved in carpentry and woodworking as well. For them, building was a means of creativity. This creativity was passed on to my Dad. Nothing could induce my dad to leave a job partially or poorly finished. I have reason to be proud of him; he moves easily from remodeling houses, to cabinetry, to building fine coffins for church families in his community.
I grew up working with my brothers in my Dad’s building business during summer vacations. After graduating from Ozark Mennonite School in SW Missouri, I began working full time with Jamco Builders in Seymour, MO, a company that specializes in Horse buildings / indoor riding arenas, Churches and Retail stores. At 18 years of age I was promoted to Contractor’s assistant. My job description was project management, building design and sales. For me, an outdoors person, being in the office and taking on these responsibilities constituted a huge learning curve. Today I view that time in the office as a business internship of incredible value in my learning experience.
As a 20 year old, my Church tapped me on the shoulder and asked if I’d consider spending a year at our mission in Belize as a personnel worker and yes, to assist with building projects. I was ready for something different. This proved to be one of highlights of my life. I was assigned to just make myself part of the village, make myself useful and tell people about the Lord. For me this was great! I learned multiple building methods and techniques that involved far from the latest building technology.. The people were very warm there and I’m blessed with lasting friendships from that period in my life.
Upon my return from Belize I joined forces with my brother Ron as an employee in his Electrical contracting company. His company was experiencing a growth spurt and I was interested in learning more about the mechanical side of construction. From Ron I learned the difference between a good wiring job and one that could pass code: how to make up a good electrical panel, a good conduit job, connections that wouldn’t corrode with time, the importance of proper grounding and many other important electrical concepts. This hands-on experience in the mechanical field has been an invaluable asset to our company!
At the age of 22 I met Alisa Yoder, from Rustburg, VA for the first time. A year later I had succeeded in changing her last name to mine and bringing her to MO! Soon after our marriage we began thinking seriously of starting our own residential building company. Alisa’s Grandfather, Milton Hostedler, was a well known building contractor in the Rustburg, VA area, so it was a natural for her to be on board in thinking of starting our own company. As we were feeling our way into the Residential market, we were blessed to pick up several very nice addition and remodel projects… Schrock Homes was on the map!
In 1998 our Church again tapped us on the shoulder. This time, asking if we’d serve in the capacity of director in the Romanian orphanage project they were undertaking. The commitment period was four years, if we consented. It didn’t take us long to decide. The need was great, a wonderful opportunity for a young couple with 1 little boy. We fulfilled our existing contracts, referred our customers to other family members in the same business and 5 months later found ourselves across the world in the very different kind of business of bringing health and security to mal-nourished and unwanted babies and children. We fulfilled that commitment in 2003 and this time Alisa brought me to VA. Our experience in Romania shaped our lives in many ways and continues to be part of our present.
In 2003 we founded Schrock Construction, in Rustburg, VA.. Since then we’ve been blessed with many good customers in the Lynchburg area. We’ve done a number of house additions, shops and horse barns in the past 8 years. Our area of specialty is fine Homes. We’ve built homes in the Mountains of Amherst County, Smith Mtn. Lake and more locally in the prestigious Troublesome Creek subdivision. In the very near future we plan to begin construction of a new home at The Preserve at Oakwood! We’re excited to have the opportunity of being chosen as one of the select builders in this fine subdivision in the Heart of Lynchburg.
Why the logo “Building A Tradition”?
We’re well aware that technologies are constantly changing in the building industry. In the residential industry, products are marketed according to square foot values for loan purposes. Notwithstanding the way the building market has homogenized, we believe we have a very valuable tradition to present in the home market.... the time honored tradition of integrity, creativity and quality that comes with doing what we love and know best.
If you’re thinking about building, we would be honored to have you consider us. We’re committed to building our tradition of expertise, quality, and value into your home, giving attention to the details that make your house more than just another address on the block or in the country. It’ll be Schrock built!
